Have you visited your neighborhood school lately? You might be surprised. As you walk through the doors of Canterbury Elementary, you will find an atmosphere and attitude of achievement that permeates the school. It's a whole new experience!
Canterbury School is one of seven elementary schools in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District and houses approximately 370 students from diverse backgrounds in kindergarten through fifth grade. Many Canterbury families have lived in the surrounding neighborhoods for years and are proud to send their children to our school. The staff is committed, caring, and works hard to ensure that every student's needs are met in order for them to be successful academically and socially! We teach students to take care of themselves, each other, and our world.
Canterbury is an authorized International Baccalaureate School. The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a trans-disciplinary program of international education for children aged 3 to 12 years. It focuses on the total growth of the developing child, touching hearts as well as minds and encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic development. Students will also explore the humanities and arts as an integral part of their development. We teach Spanish as our World Language to all students in the school: K-5.
Our PTA is involved and passionate about serving our students. They sponsor many family and parent activities throughout the school year: Ice Cream Social to start the year, Muffins for Moms, Donuts for Dads, Sweetheart Dance, and the Spring Fling. The PTA offers a variety of after-school enrichment activities for our students. In the past we have offered Chess Club, Martial Arts, Spanish, Drama Smarts, Yoga, Puzzle Club, and Golf.
Our school partners with FAST, Family Connections, JCU, Ursuline College, LINKS and Church of the Reedemer. In addition, we offer curriculum and service based activities throughout the year- All-school Clambake in the fall, BBQ lunch in the spring, Family Literacy Nights, Furry Friends' Fundraiser, Bike Rodeo, Book Character Celebration, Chill Out and Read, Pennies for Patients, Spelling Bee, IB PYP 5th-grade Exhibition, and multiple musical performances.
We are an energetic school full of life and vitality! We are confident that our enthusiasm, high standards, and commitment to educational excellence will be reflected in the actions and achievements of our Canterbury Tigers.
