Roxboro Elementary School is nestled on the corner of a very quiet street. For those who do not come our way often, you may miss us. However, once you enter our school, you will be greeted with an engaging atmosphere that focuses solely on the success of our students. Our school offers a variety of engaging activities and a strong learning environment for our approximately 320 students. There are great things happening here at Roxboro and we invite you to learn more about us.
Chess ClubAll students in grades kindergarten through five are invited to attend our chess camp held here at Roxboro. Players are matched upon ability, not age, and are placed in groups of no more than 10 students. Each group is led by a masterful chess player who teaches skill and strategy. At the end of the two sessions, we hold a chess tournament for every student at each of our elementary schools. They compete against each other for the title and a trophy.
Spanish ClubLast year a few Roxboro parents came together and started a Spanish club for all students in grades kindergarten through five. The students were placed in small groups and a fluent Spanish speaking adult was assigned to their group. Students were instructed in the area of conversational Spanish. This was a huge success and over 85 students joined the club. Spanish Club will start in January this year.
Young Men of Roxboro and Young Women of Roxboro: These two groups are facilitated by educators working within our District. Students in grade five are invited to attend this group where they work at building self esteem, confidence, and responsibility.
The “Village” Volunteer Program Three years ago, the PTA created a program known as the “Village.” This program recruits volunteers who are parents, grandparents, or community members to tutor at Roxboro Elementary during the school day. Last year our volunteer total was up to 80 adults, and each classroom teacher was receiving about three hours per week of tutoring services. The tutors work one on one with students or in small groups. Some tutors even work side by side with the teacher in the classroom. This program has been integral to our success.
Homework ClubThree days a week students in grades three, four, and five are able to stay after school to receive help with their homework. Homework Club is serviced by a few dedicated teachers who take time out of their afternoon to assist our students.
Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program Last year Roxboro received a $20,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Education that allowed us to provide a fresh fruit or vegetable to every child in the school on every day that school was in session. Unfortunately, however, we were not awarded the grant for this year. PTA funds and parent donations are being used right now to continue the grant on a smaller scale. One day each week students and staff will be provided with a fresh fruit or vegetable snack. The students are thrilled that the popular program is coming back.
These are just a few examples of the many educational activities that are taking place on our quiet end of the street. The Roxboro Elementary staff is dedicated to the success of all of our students. Teachers meet weekly to plan curriculum, to grade assessments, to problem solve, and to differentiate their instruction. Professional development is always being utilized to provide for the best instructional services to our students. District adoptions such as the Everyday Math Program and the McMillan/McGraw Reading Series are both examples of our District’s support in providing intensive programs that assist in meeting the needs of all of our students, regardless of ability.
