Middle Schools Host Annual Spelling Bee

Dec. 19, 2020 -- On December 4, Roxboro Middle School held its 10th Annual Spelling Bee. Joined by students from Monticello Middle School, the event doubled as the 3rd Annual Spelling Bee for what was known as Heights Middle School, when Rox and Monti were combined on the Wiley campus during building renovations. Taking place in Roxboro’s Media Center, the bee was coordinated by Beth Woodside and pronounced by Krista Hawthorne.

There were 22 student spellers, the bee’s largest turnout ever, and a roomful of family spectators. Student participants Natalie Bier, Sophia Muller, and Ruby Tugeau placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the competition, respectively. Two of the Spelling Bee winners are set to participate in the county spelling bee on March 7, 2020, starting at 9:00 a.m. in the auditorium at Tri-C’s Metro Campus.

With the assistance of many students over the years, Beth Woodside has curated a fairly comprehensive list of silent G words and her long-standing challenge to the entire Tiger Nation community still stands:

“I am awarding $5 per word (up to 3 words per person; lifetime limit) for any silent G words you can find that are not already on my Silent G Word List. I am not including words where the G is combined with an H, as in light or sigh. I am also not including words in which the G follows an N, as in wrong or finger. The word you find must have at least one pronunciation in which the G is not heard, as listed in Merriam-Webster Unabridged. We have 143 entries so far, and I believe there are more out there, so please help us grow this list!!”
