Gearity Students Collect 1,300 Pairs of Socks for Homeless

Dec. 23, 2019 -- Sometimes all it takes to warm someone’s heart is a brand new pair of socks. That was the idea behind University Heights’ holiday Sock Drive to benefit the homeless. Residents were invited to donate new socks throughout the month of December that would be delivered to local homeless shelters.

Students at Gearity Professional Development School got in on the action with their own sock drive led by teacher Brianne Merrill who oversees the Kiwanis Club, K-Kids, and Sean Sullivan, advisor to the Student Council.

The school collected a whopping 1,300 pairs of new socks, with one student donating 72 pairs! Mayor Michael Brennan visited the building on Friday, December 20, to accept the donations and add them to the thousands of others collected at City Hall, the Board of Education, and the University Heights Library. Brennan met with Ms. Merrill’s 2nd grade students and thanked them for being so generous and thoughtful during the holiday season, joking that he’d need a bigger car to transport all the donations.
