CLEVELAND HEIGHTS , OH – Cleveland State University music education students are part of the faculty at this year’s Heights Summer Music Camp. Now in its third year, the camp provides students with the opportunity to work in an educational setting surrounded by accomplished professionals. Seven instrumental and vocal music teachers from the District are full-time camp personnel, along with six Heights alumni presently in college, and six current Heights High orchestra members.
“The partnership is a winner for everyone,” camp administrator Susie Kaeser said. “It gives the music education students exposure to our great school music teachers and to eager young musicians. The campers benefit from a 1:4 counselor to camper ratio, and great role models.”
The camp runs from June 18 - 23 at Wiley Middle School and will serve 81 students ages 10 to 15 who participate in the instrumental music program in the Heights
Schools or who reside in the District. Donations from individuals make it possible to offer about one-third of the campers scholarship support so that music is accessible to all students who are ready to invest a week in learning music.
The camp is designed to help students develop skills and a commitment to their instrument. In doing this, students ultimately contribute to the Cleveland Heights –University Heights City School District’s tradition of musical excellence. Campers participate in an orchestra, chamber groups, music theory, and special workshops focusing on keyboarding, jazz or chorus.
Reaching Heights, a non-profit support organization for the Heights Schools, organizes the camp in partnership with the District so that music students have access to an affordable and inspiring week of intensive music learning and fun.
Campers will perform a finale concert on Saturday, June 23, at 10:30 a.m. to demonstrate what they have learned during the week. The public is invited to attend the free concert at Wiley Middle School, 2181 Miramar Boulevard, in University Heights.
