Educational Services

The main objective of the Educational Services Department (ESD) is to design and implement a quality educational experience for all students within the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City Schools. The majority of programs and processes that involve instruction for children are within the scope of the ESD. Specifically, within the division are the following departments: Curriculum and Instruction, Staff Development, Gifted Education, Career Development (Vocational) Career Prep, Educational Resources, and Educational Technology.

Staff Development As more effective instructional models are developed and the role of technology as an educational tool increases, it is critical that the instructional staff be provided opportunities to grow professionally and enhance their capabilities in the teaching- learning process.

Gifted EducationMeeting the academic needs of identified gifted and high ability children is very important. This is accomplished by identifying these students as early as possible. Gifted specialists within each elementary building provide enrichment opportunities to all K-3 students. Identified gifted students receive direct services in Reading and/or Math in grades 4 and 5 via the ACT program. Identified gifted students in grades 6-8 may self-select enrichment coursework within each middle school via the MSSP program. Honors coursework is available to all students in Math and Reading beginning in grade 6. An extensive list of Honors and Advanced Placement courses in addition to Post-Secondary Enrollment Opportunities are available to students within Cleveland Heights High School.

Educational ResourcesOur curriculum is supported by numerous resources in addition to textbooks. Teachers have easy access to audio and video tapes with instructional guides, hands-on science kits, literature kits, and software.

Educational TechnologyThe presence of technology is increasing in all of our schools. PS-21 classrooms, K-12 computer labs, and the "Rocket Zone" an interactive technology laboratory at Roxboro Middle School bring educational technology directly to the students. Program Specialists for Technology, and Information Specialists work with the instructional staff to develop and adapt instructional strategies that incorporate technology into the curriculum and classroom.
